The sacred land of Gaya

For thousands of years, families have journeyed here to free their ancestors. This is why Gaya holds a place unlike any other in our tradition.

The story of Gaya

Where a single offering liberates generations

Gaya takes its name from the demon Gayasura, whose body — blessed by the gods — became so sacred that any rite performed upon it grants liberation. The scriptures say that offering Pind Daan here delivers not one soul, but seven generations of a family's ancestors. It is here that Lord Rama, with Sita and Lakshmana, performed the last rites of King Dasharatha.

Vishnupad Temple

At the heart of Gaya stands the Vishnupad Temple, built around a 40-centimetre footprint said to be that of Lord Vishnu himself, pressed into solid rock. Pilgrims from every corner of India come to offer their rites within its sacred courtyard.

The Falgu River

Along the banks of the Falgu, families perform tarpan and Pind Daan at dawn. Even when its surface runs dry, water flows beneath the sand — a river whose quiet devotion mirrors the offerings made upon it.

Akshayavat — the immortal banyan

The undying banyan tree at Gaya is where the final offering of the Pind Daan journey is traditionally made. Blessed, it is said, by Sita Mata herself, it marks the completion of the rites and the peace they bring.
